Imagine celebrating Christmas on the Moon? Although we are not able to do that yet, La Jolla’s parade theme this year is “Christmas on the Moon”. It is not because we will send you to the Moon but it is to celebrate the first Moon landing! Every year La Jolla never fails to offer locals and visitors alike a grand event celebrating the holiday Joy. Plus, we will celebrate Christmas in the next best setting, the Beach! Here is more about our beloved parade and festival.
Celebrating 50th anniversary of the first Moon landing
This year “Christmas on the Moon” is the theme for the 62nd Annual La Jolla Christmas Parade & Holiday Festival. This year’s is reflecting the 50th anniversary of the first Moon landing. La Jolla is honored to have Astronaut and International Space Station Commander R. Shane Kimbrough join the celebration. He will be riding in one of the parade’s floats as the Space Marshal, courtesy of the NASA Astronaut Appearance Program. There will be a section where you will have an opportunity to learn all about Astronaut Kimbrough’s experiences in space exploration and future plans.
A tremendous Flyover will be the grand opening event made possible by Bill Allen, who created this wonderful tradition 40 years ago, together with the Antique Aircraft Museum. There will be dozens of festively decorated floats, bands, marching units, equestrians, vintage vehicles, fire engines, and Beauty Queens that will navigate the outlined parade. Before all the float extravaganza begins, the festivities will include Stage Entertainment and photos with Santa. As usual, Santa returns sponsored by Sunrise Rotary, and Santa’s ‘Sleigh’ is the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club Old Back Goose, 1915 Black Packard Convertible, which Santa will ride down the parade.
Each year The Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival Committee will dedicate countless volunteer hours to making each Christmas and Holiday Festival the best! But it all would not be possible without the help from the La Jolla community, along with donations and grants from foundations, businesses, and residents.
