La Jolla Farmer’s Market (or the La Jolla Open Aire Market) is held on Sundays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. It is located at the corner of Girard Avenue & Genter Street in La Jolla. It is a perfect place to buy fresh produce and gourmet foods. The market vendors are carefully selected. In fact, there is a long waiting list to become a vendor. Many locals and La Jolla visitors alike make a Sunday trip to the farmer’s market. It is one of the most local experiences you can have at the La Jolla Village.
La Jolla Open Aire Market
The La Jolla Open Aire Market is different than other farmers markets in that all proceeds benefit La Jolla Elementary School. La Jolla Elementary is a public school and the proceeds from the market fund various initiatives enjoyed by all children at La Jolla Elementary, including school improvements and programs such as art, music, library, technology and additional classroom teachers to lower class sizes.
La Jolla community
The market was started by former La Jolla Elementary School mom and La Jolla community supporter, Sherry Ahern. In 1996, Sherry had two children enrolled at La Jolla Elementary and was on the Friends of La Jolla Elementary, Inc. Board, the school’s nonprofit education foundation. The original motivation for the market was to help fund a library and librarian. At the time, the school’s “library” consisted only of a small collection of books in the back of the auditorium.
With help and support from San Diego Unified School District, local community groups, the Friends Board and Board President at the time Sarah Agler, the vision became a reality two years later. The first market was held on October 25, 1998 with 14 farmers and one artisan. The market has continued to grow and in addition to helping the children, the market has become a vibrant weekly community event and gathering place for the entire La Jolla community. The family-friendly spot features 140+ vendors and a food court serving everything from kettle corn to kebabs to Chinese dumplings.
The La Jolla Open Aire Market is located on the grounds of La Jolla Elementary about 5 minute drive from The Shoal La Jolla Beach. If you are staying at The Shoal on Sunday, make the La Jolla Farmer’s market your stop on the way back to the Cove.
